REDUCING CARBON EMISSIONS

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a way of reducing carbon emissions, which could be vital to helping tackle global warming. It is a three-step process: 1) capturing the carbon dioxide produced by power generation or industrial activity, such as steel or cement making; 2) transporting it; and then, 3) storing it deep underground.

Using carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air for products and services is known as carbon capture and utilization (CCU), and carbon capture utilization and storage, or CCUS, is an essential emissions reduction technology that can be applied across the energy system. CCUS technologies involve the capture of CO2 from fuel combustion or industrial processes, the transport of this CO2 via ship or pipeline, and its use as a resource to create valuable products or services, or its permanent storage deep underground in geological formations.

Each method captures CO2 emissions from industrial processes, such as steel and cement production, or from the burning of fossil fuels in power generation. The difference lies in whether the captured product is stored or repurposed for other purposes (i.e. fuel or other energy).
